NASA has long researched low-flatulence diets for astronauts to mitigate the issue, with Apollo crews privately complaining about the resulting stench in capsule recordings. While Orion features air scrubbers for atmospheric control, the crew must also contend with a recently fixed toilet issue and the complete absence of showers during the multi-day journey. Riskin noted that Artemis II will effectively test just "how much does it stink like farts" in the confined environment as part of preparing for future lunar missions.
