Microsoft has introduced a native Entra ID Backup and Recovery feature in preview, allowing organizations to automatically back up critical tenant objects such as users and groups with daily snapshots. This long-awaited capability enables point-in-time restores up to five days in the past, helping mitigate risks from ransomware attacks, accidental deletions, or configuration errors.

Previously, Entra ID lacked built-in backup options, leaving enterprises dependent on third-party solutions like Barracuda, Veeam, or others for identity data protection.The new tool strengthens zero-trust security postures by providing a Microsoft-native recovery option, though early access appears limited and may require specific licensing such as Entra ID P2.Experts view this as a significant step toward closing persistent gaps in Microsoft 365 resilience as cyber threats targeting identity continue to rise in 2026.
